Cures For Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a continual noise in the ear, for example a ringing or roaring that is perceived only by the person hearing it. tinnitus1In most cases it is not a serious problem but can be nuisance till it is resolved. Cures for tinnitus depend largely upon what causes it and the specific type of tinnitus that one is facing.

All of us experience tinnitus at some time or another but persistent tinnitus is what needs to be addressed. The perception of a noise, the reasons for which are not clearly understood, originates from inside the ears or the head. The noise or sound is set off by the nerve that transmits impulses to the brain or the acoustic nerve.

Tinnitus is basically a subjective phenomenon and is rated according to the practical difficulties that it causes. Objective tinnitus, a condition where a clinician can actually perceive an actual sound, is not a common occurrence.

Tinnitus by itself is not a disease but a symptom of underlying diseases like ear infections, foreign objects including wax in the ear, nasal allergies that prevent or induce fluid drain and cause wax build up and injury from loud noises. Tinnitus most commonly results from the same conditions that cause noise-induced hearing loss.

Tinnitus may also occur due to abnormally low levels of serotonin and is also the side effect of medications like aspirin. It is also a typical side effect of quinidine, a cardiac drug (trade names Quinidex and Quinora) that is used to treat certain heart arrhythmias.

In as far as cures for tinnitus are concerned there have been many claims that have been made by various manufacturers and marketers. But most of them have not been backed by statistical data to prove efficacy.

If the condition is objective, then cures for tinnitus may involve a simple clearing of the ear canal in case it is an earwax plug that is causing it. In other instances, treatments ranging from medications like beta blockers and neurotoxins to shielding of the cochlea by a Teflon implant may be required. There may also be a case for a gamma knife surgery.

Subjective tinnitus may be treated by injecting a local anesthetic like lidocaine for short term relief. Small doses of benzodiazepines (tranquilizers or sedatives or hypnotics or muscle relaxants) and tricyclics (antidepressant drugs that act by blocking the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin) have also been a part of cures for tinnitus.

These cures for tinnitus, however, provide only short term relief. The drugs used for treating tinnitus have side effects that do not justify their use for minor cases of tinnitus unless it is a serious condition. In addition to the side effects, chronic use of benzodiazepines as well as tricyclics may lead to dependency.

It is important to remember that tinnitus is not a disease but a condition that people invite upon themselves by being negligent about ear care. Given the side effects that the medication can cause, it is advisable to ensure certain things to prevent tinnitus. Avoid exposure to loud noises. If you have to use modern devices like blue tooth and ipods lower the volume and reduce risk of tinnitus. If your workplace noises are too loud, wear ear plugs or earmuffs to protect your ears.
